The Constance Bridge along B117 Road at St Remi Road in Flacq is now operational. The bridge will help to reduce traffic congestion as well as ease the flow of traffic to get access to Central Flacq, underscored the Minister of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation, Mr Deepak Balgobin.
He was speaking, this afternoon, at the soft opening of the Constance Bridge along B117 Road at St Remi Road in Flacq in presence of the Minister of Blue Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries and Shipping, Mr Sudheer Maudhoo, the Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS), Mr Rajanah Dhaliah, and the Chairman of the District Council of Flacq, Mr Kishore Kumar Jeewooth, amongst others.
Minister Balgobin highlighted that the absence of footpath along the bridge represented a potential hazard for pedestrians and it also showed signs of structural deterioration. It was therefore necessary to demolish the existing bridge of approximately 14m long, 6m wide and 3m high to reconstruct the new bridge of 28m long, 12m wide and 4m high over a length of 200m as per international standard, he stated.
He further indicated that the upgrading of the bridge has been carried out by taking into consideration the security of pedestrians. The upgrading of the bridge comprises the construction of roadside drains, footpaths, road lighting and retaining structures, he added.
For his part, Minister Maudhoo expressed his gratitude to road users and the inhabitants of the region for their patience during the eight months of works. The soft launch, he underlined, will relieve the inhabitants of the traffic issues caused due to the closure of the bridge adding that official launch of the bridge will be done very soon.
As for the PPS Dalia, he indicated that the bridge has been reconstructed in line with Government’s Road decongestion programme and that the bridge will alleviate traffic congestion in the region. He expressed his thanks to the Road Development Authority for financing the project which is estimated at Rs 57 million.
