Governor Wejang meets special representative of South Sudan

Bentiu- Governor Lt Gen Dr Joseph Wejang on Wednesday met with Nicholas Roland Leybourne Haysom, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for South Sudan and Head of the United Nations (UN) Mission in South Sudan, accompanied by U.N. Field Base Coordinator in Bentiu Madam Hiroko Hikahara to discuss general situation in Unity State.

The meeting put more emphasis on challenges and rampant insecurity posed by sub-national violence, flood and road inaccessible, and issues that hindered the implementation of the Revitalized Peace agreement, including the presence of illegal firearms in the hand of civilians.

Governor Lt Gen Dr Joseph Manytuil Wejang welcomed the courtesy visit call of Nicholas Roland Leybourne Haysom, Special Representative of South Sudan to Unity State. Governor Manytuil called on U.N. Agencies to expedite humanitarian assistance to the flood-displaced persons and added that the International Community need to provide sufficient fund for the implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement.

The Governor said the graduation of the Necessary Unified Force with sticks is another setback to maintaining laws and orders when the civilians are heavily armed and appealed to the International Community to fully support the implementation of the new Road Map and Chapter two of Security Arrangement in particular. H.E. Governor Dr Joseph Manytuil reiterated the commitment of the State government to collect firearms from the hand of civilians without hesitation to decrease the inter-communal conflicts and revenge killing among the youth.

Nicholas Roland Leybourne Haysom, the U.N. Special Representative of Secretary-General for South Sudan and Head of the United Nations in the Republic of South Sudan, said the International Community need parties to the agreement to fully commit themselves to the implementation of the Revitalized Peace agreement in letter and spirit as the only way to gain back the trust and support from the International Community. Mr Haysom urged the State government to deploy more judges in the State to hold accountable perpetrators of communal conflict and issue of cattle theft and gender based violence.
