Botswana: Women and Sports Botswana (WASBO) yesterday hosted a dinner in commemoration of International Women’s Day at Tlotlo Hotel and Conference Centre.
The event was held under the theme: DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality. The theme highlights the role of innovative technology in promoting gender equality and meeting the health and developmental needs of women and girls.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer of HATAB, Lily Rakorong, called on the use of digital platforms to promote women and girls in sports. She stated that through the collaboration of stakeholders in order to challenge stereotypes and create a more conducive and inclusive environment, women can all use their voices for the betterment of the country.
Rakorong indicated that she is hopeful that the event will inspire women to continue to strive for gender equality and to be the champion for women’s rights.
When speaking to the theme, the Managing Director of Drone of Africa, Marang Mbaakanyi, emphasized that this year’s theme is a call-in action to say women in the tech sector are required to continue working hard and refute the misconception that tech is a male-dominated sector.
“It does seem to show that efforts to advance the idea of “Women in tech” are now starting to pay off. There is still so much to be done, and that is raising awareness, advocacy for women and working together to make sure that the roles women place in the tech space do not fall short,” she said.
Mbaakanyi concluded by urging women to keep advocating for legislative reforms, work tirelessly to bring the change they want to see in society, and, most importantly, believe in their visions.
Botswana Youth and gender also celebrated Culture and Creative Industry and also informed its stakeholders of a partnership with the Botswana-EU Policy Dialogue Facility on a project to guide Botswana’s Culture and Creative Industry towards Commercialization.
The overall objective of the project is to identify shortfalls that restrict growth and pinpoint approaches that will enable Botswana’s CCI to commercialize, resulting in improved revenue streams. The project will first start with the Music Industry to explore its value chains and ways to maximize the efficiency of key stakeholders.
The project will consist of different activities, including an educational and awareness-raising campaign, later culminating in the establishment of the National Music Industry Summit in May 2023.
