Kenya: The Lamu port marked another milestone in its growing profile as a regional transhipment hub after the container vessel MV Zhong Gu Ri Zhao docked at the port early Thursday in morning. The vessel made its inaugural call and arrived carrying 415 TEUs of trans-shipment cargo, which was destined for port of Dar es Salaam.
Reportedly, MV Zhong Gu Ri Zhao departed from Nhava Sheva port in India, and journeyed through Mundra Port, Jebel Ali and Mombasa before reaching the Lamu Port.
However, the vessel which boasts a length overall (LOA) of 179.99 meters and a total capacity of 2,518 TEUs is expected to make regular calls, especially to the Port of Lamu. This further underscored the increased strategic importance of the port in maritime logistics of East Africa.
Considering this, Manager of Lamu Port – Ms. Mary Wangai described the new development as a positive sign for local businesses during the welcoming ceremony. It further expressed her optimism about the port’s growing role in handling transhipment cargo.
Manager Wangai noted that the arrival of the MV Zhong Gu Ri Zhao showcased that the global shipping lines are beginning to see Lamu as a viable option for regional trade. She also extended her gratitude to SeaLed shipping line, that encouraged them to continue using the port.
Furthermore, at a brief ceremony held onboard to commemorate the ship’s maiden visit, the port representatives attended the event and Maggelan Logistics shipping agents – Ms. Mary Wangai presented the captain with an official certificate of first call and a commemorative plaque.
Notably, the Port of Lamu is part of LAPSSET Corridor project of Kenya, which mainly intends to complement the Port of Mombasa by providing a strategic link to Ethiopia, as well as South Sudan and the broader East African market.
This marks a significant change as it will enhance the relationship and will strengthen the bond between the ship trading countries.
