Tanzania will officially inaugurate the 2,115 megawatt (MW), Julius Nyerere Hydropower Dam Project (JNHPP) next week. The opening will mark the completion of one of East Africa’s largest infrastructure undertakings.
The project was initiated by the late President John Magufuli in 2019. Magufuli sealed the deal initially at the cost of $2.9 billion which made it clear that no single penny would be borrowed from other regions but rather it will be fully funded by Tanzania.
Tanzania has now fulfilled Magufuli’s desire but at the cost of $3.35 billion which is more than the promised capital. This amount will bring Tanzania over 4,600 MW power capacity. This central pillar will help in achieving the nation’s long-term strategy for energy independence.
This project is designed to harness water resources aside the Rufiji River basin to address persistent regional electricity deficits. Work on the site has involved extensive civil engineering structures which includes a primary concrete gravity dam, spillways, intake works, and a subterranean powerhouse.
Along with this, turbine installations and grid integration tests have been successful, and will steadily led up to the official commissioning event scheduled to be observed for next week.

Tanzanian government officials have emphasised that the generation facility will significantly bolster the national grid. They are planning to provide a high-capacity electricity to support commercial operations, heavy industry and domestic consumption across urban and rural zones.
Reportedly, this dam project covers an expansive initiative within the Selous Game Reserve area. Civil works on this mega-structure project is based on a contract with an Egyptian joint venture comprising of Arab Contractors and Elsewedy Electric, who supervised heavy engineering operations and structural assembly.
Furthermore, beyond primary electricity generation, the massive reservoir is created behind the dam structure that provides regulated water storage capacity. The project designs incorporate flood control management along the downstream reaches of the Rufiji River to safeguard neighbouring communities during seasonal rainfall events.
Ahead of the inauguration ceremony, scheduled for next week, the state energy agency technical teams are completing final systems checks on transmission connections. The operational handover of the 2,115 MW site represents a critical addition to regional power infrastructure across East Africa.
Notably, the official launch ceremony will welcome regional leaders, engineering stakeholders and government delegates to mark the formal entry of the infrastructure complex into active commercial operation.
