May 25th 2024 will be celebrated as Africa Day. Formerly it is known as African Freedom Day or African Liberation Day. The day is annually commemorated as the foundation of the Organization of African Unity, established on May 25, 1963.
Africa Day is celebrated in various countries on the African continent as well as around the world. The organization was then replaced by the African Union on July 09, 2002 and the holiday continues with its celebration on May 25.
According to the contemporary or traditional celebrations, Africa Day continues with its celebrations both in Africa and around the world, mostly on May 25.
Every year, special themes are set or decided to commemorate the day. In 2015, “Year of Women’s Empowerment and Development towards Africa’s Agenda 2063” was decided as the theme.
Notably, at an event in New York City in 2015, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations – Jan Eliasson delivered a message from Secretary-General – Ban Ki Moon where he said, “Let us intensify our efforts to provide Africa’s women with better access to education, work and healthcare, and by doing so, accelerate Africa’s transformation”.
Moreover, the slogan of the 2023 Africa Day celebration was “Our Africa Our Future.”
