Zambia (Chama): An Elephant has killed a 48-year-old man in Chama district, Eastern province. The incident occurred Friday morning in Mulopwe village, Chief Chikwa’s Chiefdom.
The man, identified as Evans Lungu was going to Longa village, in the same Chiefdom, to look for some piecework to buy food (maize) and, on his way, got attacked and killed by the elephants.Chama South Member of Parliament Davidson Mung’andu confirmed the incident.
Mung’andu says it is sad that lives have continued to be lost through human-animal conflict in his Constituency. He said elephants not only kill people but also ravage people’s crops, which contributes to the hunger situation in the area.
The MP says there is a need for people to be helped with food following the reports of hunger in some parts of his Constituency.
On the other hand, Mung’andu said he raised a matter of concern on the issue of human-animal conflict in the National Assembly, and he was told to constitute a committee consisting of other affected Members of Parliament to look into the issue.
Mung’andu said the committee has been formed, and soon, the names will be submitted to the Speaker of the National Assembly for further consideration.
He said the committee, in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, will be on the ground next year, visiting the affected Constituencies and getting the views from people on how the issue of human-animal conflict can be mitigated.
Residents of the area are sad about the sudden demise of the man and blaming the development of the nation. They consider that he died because the development of the nation is bad and it need to be improved.
“Sad development at this moment of festive. May the Almighty lord protect our country. No one ll cry again this day,” said one of the locals.
