Botswana: The President of Botswana, Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi has been appointed as the Champion of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS). The appointment was made during a Troika Meeting of the OACPs Heads of State and Government.
The meeting was hosted on the margins of the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA79) in New York this morning. The members of the African Community convened for a number of meetings during the 79th United Nations General Assembly.
The officials have shared that the members of the community have extended their best wishes to the President for his appointment. The leaders of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) also extended their best wishes.
The officials have shared that President Mokgweetsi Masisi was appointed into the position to provide tangible support for the organisation’s resource mobilisation efforts. At the same time, the organization needs significant support for the structural reforms needed by the organisation to carry out its duties.
The Prime Minister of Botswana, Dr Masisi will be working closely with the Chairperson of OACPS President João Lourenço of the Republic of Angola and OACPS’s Secretariat. The leaders have shared that the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) consists of 79 Member States.
Nations from Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific come together and discuss the development projects they can take up for the mutual benefit of all the nations. The organisation seeks to achieve sustainable development of its Member States and their integration into the world economy.
One of the organisation’s milestone achievements is the signing of the Samoa Agreement by the European Union (EU) and its 27 Member States and the 79 Member States of OACPS in Apia, Samoa on the 15th November 2023.
The Samoa Agreement prioritises human rights, democracy and good governance including gender equality and the rule of law. The EU and the African, Caribbean and Pacific States represent over 1.5 billion people and more than half of the seats at the United Nations.
