In order to further confirm this, the website is also privy to a communication by the Vice-Chairperson of the NRM caucus in Parliament, ‘Herbert Kinobere‘, asking some of fellow NRM MPs to accompany Among for the nomination tomorrow.

“The Rt Deputy Speaker will be going to the NRM Electoral Commission to express her interest in the Speaker of Parliament position at 11 am today. Therefore, it is my request to those who will be around to inbox me as we arrange to escort her,” Kinobere said in the message.

On this matter, the Director of Communication at Parliament’ Chris Obore’ stated that through his tweet that there is no legal requirement for Among to first resign as a deputy speaker.

Obore also tweeted that she doesn’t need to resign even if she wants to compete for the position of Speaker. It is required for the cabinet member to resign first, and then they are eligible to compete.

This development comes on the backdrop of reports that the new Speaker is now set to be elected on Friday, March 25, 2022.

As per Article 82(4) of the Constitution, no business shall be transacted in Parliament other than an election to the office of Speaker at any time that office is vacant.

This clearly states that if any business happens in Parliament, there must be a speaker.

By the time Oulanyah’s body is returned home later this week, there must be a new speaker to preside over the parliamentary business.
