Zambia: The acting Eastern Province Permanent Secretary, Lewis Mwape has announced that the government of Zambia will rehabilitate dams in Chasefu District. The commitment of thee government will help the officials in making sure that they can enhance food security.
The country has been facing a lot of issues when it comes to food security. The reason for this is that the rains in the last agriculture season was not up to par with the needs of the communities. The officials have shared that it is the responsibility of the government to make sure the needs of the people are being met
Dr. Mwape says the rehabilitation of the dams is key to enhance agricultural productivity in the wake of the recent drought. He also highlighted the the drought had severely affected crop yields and posed challenges of water scarcity.
The people of the nation have shared that the members of the community are working hard to make sure that the food shortages can be dealt with. Chasefu District Commissioner, Jimmy Phiri heard of the issue from , Dr. Mwape.
He highlighted that government recognises the potential of local farmers contributing to food security through effective use of the water resources.
He noted that the district houses many farmers who can significantly benefit from the water resources the dams pr ovide.
The agricultural potential of Chasefu District is significant. With the right support, the district’s farmers can thrive. Reliable water sources around the communities will help them to cultivate their land and boost food production,” he said
Dr. Mwape said the rehabilitation works will restore existing dam infrastructure and improve water management practices, thereby creating a sustainable system that allows farmers to use water efficiently throughout the year.
He further said the rehabilitation of dams is part of the government’s broader goals of promoting food security and reducing poverty in the district and country at large.
Dr Mwape e added that restoring the dams would benefit local farmers and contribute to the overall economic development of the district.
