Zambia: The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) in Lundazi district has distributed 1,100 bags of maize to families in the district. The bags contained 50 kilograms of maize which were given to Mnyamazi ward under the food for work component.
The families in many parts of Zambia have been struggling with the shortage of food as a result of low rainfall in the district. The distribution of Maize is part of the DMMU guidelines which allow for the allocation of 80 percent towards food for work.
The food for work initiative is also a part of the relief distribution programme that the DMMU has been initiating across Zambia. DMMU Project Implementing Partners claimed that they are happy to see the successful implementation of the initiative.
Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) is partnering with DMMU for the initiative. Relief and Development Director Meman Mwandila is said the community has conducted excellent works.
Mwandila spoke to the media regarding this excellent development in Lundazi. He said that beneficiaries of the relief maize worked on crossing points, mended roads, and removed tree stumps.
They also helped in finishing the preliminary works where a grader was supposed to pave the roads. He added that the community cleaned health facilities, moulded blocks for school projects.
Some of the food for work employees were also employed to dig pit latrines at Chipyola health post among other works. Further, Relief and Development Director Mwandila has disclosed that 600 bags of relief maize would be distributed to Msuzi ward today.
He explained that 80 percent of the bags would be distributed under food for work while 20 percent will be for the vulnerable households in the ward.
The on-going DMMU’s relief maize distribution under phase two is government’s initiative aimed at providing food to communities in the district following failed crop yields owing to the prolonged drought in the 2023/2024 farming season.
