Free State: Kamohelo Mosikili represented the Free State province as one of the top performers at the announcement of the 2023 matric results held in Johannesburg on Thursday, 18 January 2024.

While Mosikili rightfully became the face of the province’s success, with media clamouring around him at today’s well-done function, his school, Selelekela Senior Secondary School from QwaQwa, had three other learners who made it into the top 100 best-performing learners in the province.

The learners are Boitumelo Mopati, Thandeka Makhubo, Moalusi Semase and Mosikili himself.

Deputy school principal Jimmies Komako attributed the school’s success to hard work and the cooperation between the school and the parents of the learners.

“We are quite happy to have four of our learners in the top 100 best-performing learners. We are very proud of this achievement. It was all due to the commitment, sacrifice and hard work by all of us that has resulted in this incredible accomplishment.

We are also fortunate because we have very cooperative parents who instil discipline in their children, which makes our job easy because we have highly discipline learners,” said Deputy Principal Komako, who is a mathematics teacher.

He revealed that of the 108 learners who sat down for the examinations, ninety-seven (97) of them got a bachelor’s, ten (10) diplomas, and only one learner got a certificate.

“We put more focus and time on our learners. Our learners did not have time off because even on weekends, they showed up for studies,” he said.

Premier of the Free State, Mxolisi Dukwana, congratulated the learners at the well-done function held at the Central University of Technology, Bloemfontein campus, in Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality.

Yesterday, on Thursday, Free State Education MEC Makalo Mohale arrived at Mosaiek Church in Randburg, where Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga is expected to announce the national senior certificate examination results for the class of 2023.

For the past four years, the province has maintained position one in matric results. The province has been hard at work to ensure that it retains the spot of the best-performing province. Last year, the province recorded the highest rate at 88.5%. Speaking ahead of the announcement, MEC Mohale said.
