Kahare Chiefdom in Nkeyema District installed a new Chief for their community after close to 14 years of succession disputes in the community. The installation of the new chief comes after a High Court judgment which was delivered on July 23, 2026.
The conflict allegedly started after the death of Chief Bolen Munguya Timuna after which disagreements rose within the community regarding who had the customary right to the throne of the chiefdom.
The matter was brought to court in 2016 and has seen significant bloodshed in relation to this matter for over a decade. The members of the royal family questioned the legitimacy of the selection process employed in the selection process.
During the court hearing the judge ruled in favour of Justine Timuna Kahare and reaffirmed that he was the legitimate Mwene Kahare of the Nkoya people of Nkeyema District.
The decision of the court has been jailed as a historic and long awaited event in the chiefdom as the people had been looking forward to an official resolution for more than a decade. The representatives of the government have also come out to congratulate the new chief of the Kahare Chiefdom.
Western Province Permanent Secretary Simomo Akapelwa delivered brief remarks at the coronation ceremony event and reaffirmed Government’s commitment to working with traditional leaders across the country in attaining the Grow Zambia Agenda and cited the role traditional leaders play in fostering good governance.
Meanwhile, Barotse Royal Establishment Induna Imangambwa Namushi Nyambe has also called on the new Chief to embrace peace and unity among his subjects, noting that the divisions experienced in the chiefdom had hindered development. The people of the communities across the western province have celebrated the occasion and congratulated the Kahare Chiefdom for reaching a peaceful resolution of the problems they had been experiencing for the last decade and half.
