KwaZulu Natal, Verulam: A man in his forties was brutally stabbed while shopping at the Verulam Market on Wick Street in the Verulam CBD – KZN on Thursday morning.

Reaction Unit South Africa received multiple calls for assistance from the public after they witnessed the attack, and officers were immediately dispatched to the crime location at approximately 7:10 in the morning.

After reaching there, the Reaction Unit officer saw the victim in a pool of blood. As per the medics’ report, he was stabbed multiple times throughout his body. A Reaction Officer who was responding to the scene was flagged down by a member of the public on Ireland Street.

The man advised the Officer that he was responsible for the stabbing and handed over a bloodied Okapi knife. The Reaction Officer immediately restrained him without incident.

The suspect explained to RUSA officers that he lives in Inanda – KZN and the dead victim is his neighbour. Further, he also explained about his disputes with the victim in the past. One of the incidents resulted in him being arrested for the rape of his four (4) year old niece after the victim allegedly convinced his sister to register a criminal case against him falsely.

Further, he said he was angry after seeing the victim shopping at the Verulam Market this morning, and that anger caused me to stab him.

However, there is no statement from the victim’s side as he was not in his sense due to the extent of his injuries. He was taken to the hospital by his family, and police arrested the suspect at the South Africa Police Station in Verulam.

Moreover, the residents of Verulam justify the suspect and say he was right at his place and seemed like an honest man. He suffered because of the victim and his family. People are also hoping that police provide the suspect with a good legal advisor.

“The suspect seems like an honest man. He is a victim of circumstance. I hope he is provided with good legal counsel. Reaction Unit South Africa, would it be possible to start a crowd fund to help the suspect with legal assistance if needed?” said one of the locals.
