Prez Prithvirajsing Roopun unviels Tagore statue at ‘Vishwarang’

Mauritius: The President of Mauritius, Prithvirajsing Roopun, unveiled a statue of Shri Rabindranath Tagore on Thursday. The unveiling ceremony was hosted during the sixth edition of International Hindi Conference ‘Vishwarang’.

The conference is being hosted  at the Rabindranath Tagore Institute (RTI) in Ilot. The unveiling of the statute and the conference was followed by an exhibition showcasing paintings by Tagore..

The exhibition of the paintings was also inaugurated by President Roopun in a brief ceremony attended by several government officials. The list included,

  • The Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun
  • The Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Kalpana Koonjoo-Shah
  • The High Commissioner of India to Mauritius, K. Nandini Singla
  • The Chairman of the Mahatma Gandhi Institute (MGI) & RTI Council, Indradut Ram
  • The Director of Vishwarang (Bharat), Mr Santosh Choubey.

Further, Rabindranath Tagore University of Bhopal and MGI & RTI Mauritius signed a Memorandum of Understanding. The signatories were Dr Vijay Singh, Registrar of Rabindranath Tagore University, and Rajcoomar Rampertab, Director General of MGI & RTI Mauritius.

President Roopun Delivered a brief keynote address at the ‘Vishwarang’ conference. He expressed that he was proud to unveil the statue of Rabindranath Tagore, who is considered a revered figure in global literature.

President Prithvirajsing Roopun highlighted RTI’s mission to honour and extend Rabindranath Tagore’s legacy. The administration has been witnessing a growing role of Rabindranath Tagore in education and the arts.

He also emphasised that the exhibition of Rabindranath Tagore’s paintings will be open to the public of Mauritius. The President also expressed his happiness at signing the MoU between Rabindranath Tagore University of Bhopal and MGI & RTI Mauritius.

He noted that the MoU will help in promoting cooperation between the two organization

Further, Vice-Prime Minister spoke about the opportunities Vishwarang 2024 has created for international collaboration. According to the President, the conference will enrich Mauritius’ educational landscape.

She stressed that the statue, donated by Rabindranath Tagore University of Bhopal, symbolises a commitment to upholding Rabindranath Tagore’s ideals of creativity and knowledge, inspiring students and visitors alike.
