Mauritius: Soopamah Madalamootoo, a resident of Rose hill celebrated turning 100 with her family and friends. The elder was born on 19 December 1924 in Quatre Bornes into a family of four brothers and four sisters.
During the celebration of her hundredth birthday, the elder was joined by her family and loved ones. Deputy Prime Minister of Mauritius, Paul Raymond Bérenger also attended the celebration Darmarajen Nagalingum, the Minister of Youth and Sports and other government officials also joined the festivities.
The aim of the celebration is to honor the elder for reaching this remarkable milestone and extending the government’s best wishes. The government gave her several gifts which she can use for her well being and ease.
Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity came together to present monetary gifts. The Ministry gave her a cheque for Rs 26,203. She also received a microwave, a bouquet and a centenarian medal along with a certificate.
Mauritius Telecom presented the newly turned 100 year old with a telephone service. The Senior Citizens Council gave her some gifts to celebrate the milestone. She has also received a cheque for Rs 10,000 from the National Solidarity Fund on this special occasion.
Mrs Madalamootoo is also known by the name Akka Soopoo. Only three of her seven siblings, all of whom are sisters, are alive today. She was educated up to Standard VI and worked as a skilled dressmaker.
She got married to her husband, Soocramanien Madalamootoo on 25 March 1956. He worked as a driver at the Reunion Sugar Estate. They lived together until his passing on 24 December 1988, at the age of 69.
The couple had four daughters and three sons. As of now, one of their sons has passed away. The centenarian Madalamootoo is grandmother to six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Madalamootoo uses a walking stick and has hearing impairment. She gives the credit of her long life to her faith in God, a healthy lifestyle, and the support of her family and friends.
Her favourite meal is fish curry, but she has a particular preference for vegetables.
