South Africa will celebrate National Youth Day on June 16

South Africa: South Africa will commemorate National Youth Day on June 16, 2022, and it has been commemorated every year since it was declared in 1994.

This is the day the country reflects on the massacre of school children during the Soweto Uprising of 1976. Each year, June 16 is, therefore, a day to recognise the struggles of the youth of 76 and celebrate the impact they brought to the liberation of the country.

In 2022, however, the day reflects the challenges faced by young people in the country and Walter Sisulu Local Municipality in particular. Major among the challenges facing our young people is a high rate of unemployment which is a cause for concern to me as a mayor and the entire leadership of our municipality, said Mayor.

Furthermore, she added, on Wednesday, June 15 2022, to highlight this Council’s plans as govt strives to address youth challenges. I can, however, indicate now that we have supported and will continue to support various youth initiatives at Walter Sisulu Local Municipality.

This year government, in general, has issued a call to action, and that call is to continuously encourage the youth and media to follow Youth Month conversations and stay engaged in all platforms where the messages are communicated.

This year’s Youth Month is commemorated under the theme:

Promoting sustainable livelihoods and resilience of young people for a better tomorrow, the call to action will be for youth to:

• Forge resilience and pursue opportunities for a sustainable livelihood today and in the future.

Mayor stated:

I, therefore, invite all the young people of Walter Sisulu Local Municipality to join me as I deliver the State of the Municipal Address on Wednesday, June 15 2022, through a live broadcast on Takalani Community Radio, WSLM official Facebook page, as well as other online media platforms and the link will be provided through WSLM Facebook page on June 15 2022. The event will start at 10h00.

Govt urges all the young people and residents of Walter Sisulu Local Municipality to take part in this important occasion, which is the first of its kind in the history of our municipality, so that youth are able to get first-hand information on the approved municipal programme of action which will make it easy for them to hold accountable.
