St. Kitts and Nevis: Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew announced economic relief measures to ease the financial burden. This bold initiative has been taken on Tuesday, April 14, 2026 while delivering the national address, especially for households, motorists and small businesses across the federation.
The government of St. Kitts and Nevis is planning to implement four key interventions from April 20, 2026. It will absorb millions in revenue to ensure that the cost-of-living does not outpace the dignity of the people.
Considering this, PM Drew expressed on his official social media handle that, as a government, they are taking real action, easing the cost of living, investing in the people, and building a stronger, more resilient St. Kitts and Nevis for the future. This is about relief for today and opportunity for tomorrow.
PM Drew invited all to watch the full National Address and hear directly the path forward for the Federation. He said, “Together, we will navigate these times. Together, we will continue powering progress.”
The newly announced relief package includes:
- 50% reduction in excise tax on gasoline from EC$1.95 to EC$0.98 per gallon (Government absorbs EC$1.2 million)
- Reduction of Customs Service Charge (CSC) on gasoline from 6% to 3% (Government absorbs EC$600,000)
- Alternative energy equipment including solar PV panel, made 100% free of value-added tax (VAT), CSC, and Import Duty (Government absorbs EC$405,000)
- Shipper surcharges excluded from Customs tax and duty calculations
Prime Minister Drew acknowledged the global headwinds and faced Developing States like St. Kitts and Nevis. He reaffirmed the commitment of St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party administration to shield citizens and residents where it can and empower them where it must.
Dr. Drew further stated that even as they build for the long term, they hear their struggles in the short term. These are not gimmicks. These are genuine, targeted interventions to put money back in their pocket, to keep their lights on, to keep their vehicle moving and to help them breathe a little easier in a stormy world. He added that their government will choose relief over revenue, because when the people can breathe, the economy grows.
Prime Minister Drew also reiterated that these measures are part of the broader Sustainable Island State Agenda (SISA) and the Sustainable Economic Expansion and Diversification (SEED) economic diversification strategy. It is a deliberate pivot away from over-reliance on Citizenship by Investment toward a more resilient, inclusive and productive economy.
Furthermore, the Government continues to urge businesses, particularly the importers and retailers. They will ensure that these savings are passed directly to consumers. These relief measures are effective from April 20, 2026 through July 31, 2026, with the alternative energy equipment policy extended to December 31, 2026. Notably, the discounted VAT rate days are scheduled throughout the year.
