Botswana A delegation of officers from Ukrainian Embassy paid a courtesy call to the Mayor office in Gaborone. The aim of the visit was to discuss the the bilateral relationship between Ukraine and Botswana.
The Ukrainian Embassy delegation included the Ambassador of Ukraine Dr Oleksiy Syvok. He congratulated the Mayor on his appointment as the City Mayor after the elections. He also appreciated the Mayor’s effort to be present for this meeting despite his tight schedule.
Dr Syvok has advocated for a twining agreement between Gaborone and the cities of Ukraine. Furthermore, he mentioned that the agreement will make way for information sharing between Botswana and Ukraine regarding different sectors, arts and crafts, tourism and education and more.
The Ukrainian ambassador has seen some of the locations around Gaborone City which could be used as tourist attraction. These sites boast of beautiful mural displays and paintings. The ambasador said that through the office of the Mayor they can also promote greenery around the city by developing a recreational park that will be an international monument which will be visited by any member of state who visits Gaborone City.
The mayor of Gaborone thanked the ambassador of Ukraine to Botswana acknowledging that Gaborone as will be prioritizes as a tourist attraction site by itself. The Mayor further said that they are making efforts to improve the city to the best of their capacity.
The steps that are being taken in this regard include improving the state of artistry, creativity in our monuments and recreational parks to help attract more visitors.
The Mayor expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the Ukrainian Ambassador for being able to notice such needs as well as willing to provide assistance in the development of Gaborone City. The Gaborone City Mayor said that African Mall and Main Mall are the oldest shopping malls in Gaborone. This status of the malls makes them landmarks. He also suggested that youngsters can use the main mall to display or sell artefacts and paintings.
In addition, The Deputy Mayor Mankie Sekete mentioned the need of having a youth centre which will accommodate a good number of young people who are currently idle and turning to drugs and alcohol for recreation. She further said the three flyovers built around the city to help traffic congestion would be an excellent start in displaying the murals as a way of appreciating creativity and also adding positive energy to the aesthetic look of the city.
