Nigeria: American President Donald Trump signals warmer US-Nigeria ties as Washington deepens security partnership with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Relations between the United States and Nigeria appear to be improving after Trump praised Tinubu’s leadership in a letter that highlighted growing cooperation between both countries on security and counterterrorism.
The letter was issued on July 06, 2026 and was released by Nigeria’s presidency on Wednesday, July 22, 2026 which marked a notable change in tone after Trump criticised Nigeria’s handling of violence affecting Christian communities last year and warned that Washington could cut aid and consider other measures against Africa’s largest economy.
In the letter, Trump commended Tinubu’s decisive leadership on behalf of the Nigerian people and praised his efforts to address violence affecting Christian communities. US President wrote that it is a true honour to stand with you in the fight against terrorists and to make the Federal Republic of Nigeria stronger and more prosperous.
The message came as Washington and Abuja expanded security collaboration against militant groups operating across Nigeria and the wider West African region. According to Nigeria’s presidency, both countries have established a joint security working group to strengthen intelligence sharing, military training and coordinated operations against terrorist organisations.

Therefore, cooperation has become a central pillar of the relationship as insecurity that continues to threaten regional stability. This renewed engagement was reinforced last week when US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs – Frank Garcia visited Abuja for talks with senior Nigerian officials on security cooperation, justice sector reforms, investment and regional stability.
Garcia reviewed progress under the Nigeria-US Joint Working Group during meetings with National Security Adviser – Nuhu Ribadu and other government officials. The latest developments represent a significant diplomatic shift from late 2025, when Trump accused the Nigerian government of failing to protect Christians from extremist violence and threatened to suspend aid while raising the possibility of military action.
However, Nigeria rejected those allegations, maintaining that insecurity affects citizens of all religious backgrounds and that its security operations target terrorist groups rather than violence directed at any particular faith. The improving relationship comes at a strategically important time for both countries.
Nigeria remains one of Washington’s key security partners in Africa because of its role in combating insurgent groups in the Lake Chad Basin, countering instability across West Africa and supporting regional security efforts. For the United States, closer cooperation with Nigeria also supports broader interests in regional stability, economic engagement and investment across Africa’s largest economy.
While Trump’s letter does not erase previous disagreements, it suggests both governments are placing greater emphasis on shared security priorities than on the public tensions that characterised relations only a few months ago. The warmer diplomatic tone could help in reinforcing confidence in one of Africa’s most important bilateral partnerships, particularly as both countries seeking deeper cooperation on security, trade and investment.
