Zambia: The Mambwe District of Eastern Province has been facing heavy rains and significant damage to property. The weather situation in the community is extremely drastic and has left many families in a state of homelessness.
The weather officials have shared that the incessant rains have destroyed 20 houses in Mambwe District of Eastern Province. The people who have been affected by thee situation have come forward to share their concern on the situation.
The rain and storm season in Zambia is a period of concern for the communities across the nation. Every year, reports of infrastructure damage and loss of life are reported from all over Zambia.
The administration of the more flood prone areas have been urged to make more room for prevention and safety of the community. The Mambwe District Administrative Officer Weston Phiri has confirmed that the rains destroyed 20 housing structures in Maulidi village.
They have also confirmed the destruction of another five housing structures in the Cropping area in Mfuwe. Phiri said a roof was also blown off at Nsefu Primary School on Friday November 15, 2024.
He told the officials of the media that the District Administration has already communicated with the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU). The administration requesting for assistance on behalf of the victims.
Phiri said the affected families needed basic needs such as food and tents and the efforts to procure the supplies are currently underway.
He added that the district was unable to provide tents at the earliest possible time using the disaster component of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF). This was because all signatories at the Local Authority were unavailable at the time.
He further said that the district had requested 100 tents from DMMU to enable prompt distribution in an event of more houses collapsing, adding that the rainy season had just begun in the district and more structures were anticipated to collapse as the district was prone to flash floods.
