Cape Town: The Human Settlement Directorate of the City of Cape Town handed over Eighteen (18) homes to beneficiaries and their families at the Gugulethu Infill Housing Project ceremony. The families received the keys to their Breaking New Ground (BNG) homes in the Gugulethu section of the project.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Human Settlements – Councillor Carl Pophaim stated that they are proud to celebrate with the new first-time homeowners and their families. This marks a new beginning for the beneficiaries. Probably, the one that is filled with joy, pride and hope for the future.
The Human Settlements teams remain dedicated, works tirelessly to deliver homes in Gugulethu, and across the communities throughout the metro.
Reportedly, the Gugulethu Infill Housing project will deliver 1004 homes to qualifying beneficiaries and their families. These homes are made-up of 570 units at the Gugulethu Erf 8448 site and 434 at Mau Mau in Nyanga.
The project has experienced several challenges that included contractor issues, Covid-19 related delays, extortion attempts, unlawful occupation of partially completed units at the Mau Mau portion of the project and vandalism to work that was already completed.
Considering this, Cllr Carl Pophaim said that the work continues as they are delivering homes at the Gugulethu Infill Housing Project for the beneficiaries and their families as soon as possible. They thanked the community, all stakeholders and the dedicated teams whose hard work makes every handover possible.
Notably, the beneficiaries of City housing projects are selected under a criterion in accordance with the Housing Allocation Policy and Housing Needs Register of the City of Cape Town. It ensures that housing opportunities are made available in a fair and transparent manner. Also, it prevents queue jumping and provide help to those who qualify for housing as per the South African legislation.
The city has handed over several houses earlier also, under this great initiative to provide home and shelter to the residents and beneficiaries.
