Malawi: Lilongwe police have arrested 24-year-old suspect, who has been identified as Manuel Mazoni for breaking into the home. The house in question belonged to an Indian national and was situated in Area 9, Lilongwe.
The suspect was taken to custody for stealing various items which have been valued at K14 million. The robbery allegedly took place on December 27, 2024.
Police detectives who are investigating the incident, have also arrested two other individuals whose names have not been made public. The other two offenders have been accused of receiving and selling the said stolen property.
According to the police officers, the suspect, Mazoni broke into the home of Harpal Singh, who is working at the Indian High Commission in Lilongwe. The suspect stole various items from the Indian resident.
The list of stolen items included 2 I-Phone handsets, one laptop, one Apple iPad and one Samsung phone, a Bluetooth speaker, a wallet, and a purse containing K400,000 and K200,000 in cash, respectively.
The officials have shared that they conducted a careful study of the crime scene and critical analysis of the closed-circuit Television (CCTV) footage. After a thorough study, Mazoni was identified as the culprit who broke into the home,
When the officials arrested Mazoni in Area 36, he admitted to committing the crime. He also disclosed that he had sold the stolen items to another individual. Further investigations led to the identification of this second suspect.
During a raid at the suspect’s residence, police recovered a Bluetooth speaker and a wallet. However, the second suspect informed the police that he had also sold some of the stolen items to a third individual.
The third suspect had already crossed the borders into Mozambique with the items and had sold the items already when the officers made the arrest. The officers are currently recover the items from the neighbouring country.
The three suspects will appear in court soon to answer to the charges. Manuel Mazoni is a resident of the Chidothi Village, Traditional Authority Chakhaza in Dowa District.
