Nearly three people were injured after an accident involving Global bus registration number UAX 283A and a Canter Diana registration number UBJ 648J along Masaka road, and it is also estimated that nearly 69 passengers have survived death because the bus was overturned in a village.
As per the PRO Traffic and Road Safety ASP Faridah Nampiima, the accident occurred on Friday at around 1040hrs.
The bus route was from Kampala to Mbarara, and the canter through which the accident happened came from Masaka to Kampala.
The reason for the accident is that the bus was trying to give way to the canter, which was overtaking carelessly; the bus sheered off the road and overturned, injuring three people, said Nampiima.
As per the Traffic Police PRO, the Police took the victims to the nearby clinics by press time to get first aid.
By the time this report was written, information on the number of passengers on board was still scarce.
The police officers present at the crime location seized the canter and arrested the driver as investigations into the accident are still going on.
According to Nampiima, the Police will share more details in due course.
The Mbarara-Kampala route has remained one of the country’s worst and most deadly highways, with between 200 and 300 fatalities yearly.
Passengers and road safety campaigners have long complained about Global Coaches’ high speeds, which they claim endangers the lives of people on board.
A Global Coaches driver died, and twenty passengers were injured in a nocturnal collision near Kyazanga Town in Lwengo District on the Masaka-Mbarara route on August 18, 2016.
After failing to brake, a Global bus bound for Kampala collided with a house in Mpugwe, Kalungu District, on May 26, 2019. There were no injuries among the passengers.
Another Global bus crashed with a Toyota Noah near Nkoni Village on the Masaka–Mbabara route on December 20, 2019, killing seven people and injuring numerous more.
