Zambia: Five individuals are suspected to be involved in a daylight robbery at a maize depot along Ngoma Road in Kalomo. The robbery incident happened on Monday in the early hours of the day.

The suspects who were involved in the incident remain unidentified by the police officers. Meanwhile, they have claimed that the suspects fled with 78 bags of maize, each weighing 90 kilograms. The collective value of the maize came out to be at K59,670.

Two individuals who were involved in preventing the robbery were injured. The 38 year old Felix Choonga who is allegedly the owner of the stolen goods reported the matter to the Police. He is a resident of Bwacha Compound.

He informed the Police officers that the assailants had assaulted his security guard, Anorld Sianuma. The suspects attacked him, causing a severe cut on his right hand and head.  On the other hand, another Maize buyer Oscar Mwiinga also suffered two deep lacerations on his head.

As per the reports of the Maize Depot owner, the two victims were eating dinner in the late hours of Sunday at the depot. Mwiinga left to sleep shortly after their meal, leaving Sianuma to continue his guard duties.

At approximately 01:00 the following morning, two of the suspects attacked Sianuma and injured him multiple times on the head. They also stabbed him with a screwdriver in the arm.

Mwiinga woke up shortly after hearing the sound of Sianuma’s cries for help. He went out to check and help the victim, but he was also attacked on the head by the suspects

Afterwards, the suspects bound the two victims to a pole supporting the depot’s shelter. They tied their hands behind their backs with wire, and their legs secured with a rope from a mosquito net.

Afterwards, three more individuals showed up in a Toyota Canter with a green/blue ribbon. They began loading the maize bags from the depot. After some time,  Mwiinga managed to free himself and fled to the nearby bushes.

When the suspects realized that one victim had escaped, the robbers fled towards the Kalomo town.

The public them informed the police regarding the incident and when the police got to the depot, they discovered Sianuma being freed by locals using pliers.

Both victims were transported to Request Mutanga Hospital near Kalomo, where Sianuma remains hospitalized due to significant blood loss from his head wounds, while Mwiinga was treated and released.
