Cape Town, South Africa: Disaster Risk Management Spokesperson – Charlotte Powell shares an update regarding the fire in Cape Town. According to the update provided by Charlotte Powell, ninety-seven households in Stonehaven Estate were evacuated overnight. Some of the residents of Scarborough were also evacuated.
Reportedly, most of the evacuees were able to leave the area on time without any assistance. The Disaster Management Centre activated the animal welfare groups.
The groups were activated to assist in the evacuation of animals to TEARS in Ocean View and the SPCA in Grassy Park.
As per the sources, no further evacuations are necessary at the moment. The Disaster Risk Management Centre is closely monitoring the situation.
The officials of the management centre alert the residents living in the fire-affected areas. They issued the guidelines to keep their doors and windows closed to diminish the risk of exposure to the smoke.
The Spokesperson of the Management, Powell, confirms that the team is still receiving a lot of calls regarding donations and refreshments for staff who are working on the fire line.
Notably, the donation drop-off point has moved to Simon’s Town Hall on Main Road, located next to the police station.
The Glencairn Expressway is closed from both directions between Kommetjie Main Road and Birkenhead Road. In Simon’s Town, the Main Road is closed between Rocklands Road and the entrance to the Cape Point Nature Reserve.
The Spokesperson from Fire and Rescue Services – Jermaine Carelse, also shared fire updates on Simon’s Town and Glencairn fires.
The wind spread the fire over the Simon’s Town mountains and has now reached the Misty Cliffs and Scarborough. At the same time, the vegetation fire was reported at Glencairn Expressway, which gained momentum and was heading towards the Stonehaven and Evergreen Estates.
Reportedly, the drones were deployed to help guide crews on the ground. According to the decision by executives, the off-duty staff should report to the Goodwood Fire Station to be deployed to the incidents.
The city also activated its agreement with neighbouring municipalities, securing assistance from the Stellenbosch, Drakenstein, Cape Winelands, Overstrand and West Coast Fire Services.
The spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse, extended gratitude and appreciated firefighters who stood tall in the face of danger. He appreciated the men and women for showing courage and determination. The fighters remained calm under extreme conditions.
