Mauritius: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aiming to facilitate the resettlement of inmates into the society was signed on 15 December 2022 between the Ministry of Blue Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries and Shipping and the Mauritius Prison Service under the Pay Back Mauritius Scheme.
The Minister of Blue Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries and Shipping, Mr Sudheer Maudhoo, the Commissioner of Prisons, Mr Jaganaden Rungadoo, the Acting Senior Chief Executive of the Ministry, Mr Maubarakahmad Boodhun, and other personalities were present at the signing ceremony.
The MoU aims to help detainees develop their skills and contribute to the enhancement of the environment and is being provided by Prison Officers who have successfully completed training courses by the Mauritius Institute of Training and Development.
As part of the MoU, the Mauritius Prison will enlist selected detainees in this programme after having undertaken a risk assessment, provide transport facilities to selected detainees and accompanying staff, and have regular meetings with stakeholders with a view to improving service delivery.
The Ministry will identify work placement and ascertain that relevant equipment is provided; arrange for the payment of a stipend to the selected detainees; and ensure that all safety measures are taken into consideration on work placements.
It is to be noted that the Mauritius Prison Service has undertaken several upgrading and renovation works this year which have been carried out successfully by the detainees. They comprise metal painting, electrical, plumbing and gardening works.
