Malawi: The Principal Secretary Responsible for Basic Education in the Ministry of Education reiterated their dedication to the development of education facilities. PS Dr Rachael Chimbwete Phiri was attending the three-day National Stakeholder’s Consultative Workshop.
The event was organized by the Malawi Ministry of Education in partnership with the Science For Africa Foundation (SFA Foundation). The Capital Hotel in Lilongwe served as the venue for the event, which took place on Monday.
At the event, Principal Secretary Phiri said Science, Technology and Innovation play a crucial role in enhancing the quality of education. The administration is working hard to maintain the standard of education in the country.
The Ministry of Education shared the glimpses from the workshop on their social media.
The workshop is being held to review the 2002 Science and Technology Policy. Further, the aim of the event is to formulate a National Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy (NSTIP).
The leadership of the ministry assured that the policy will be responsive to changes in the global technology landscape, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Phiri described the policy review consultative meeting as a milestone in transforming and harnessing Science, Technology, and Innovation. The policy will help in the Socio-Economic Development and accelerated growth in line with President Chakwera’s Malawi 2063 vision.
Phiri has urged participants to fully commit to enabling inclusion in the drafting of the new policy.
Director of Science, Technology, and Innovation in the Ministry of Education, Associate Professor Chomora Mikeka, also spoke at the event. He said the law provides a framework to develop policies which aim at protecting human rights.
The law also provides a platform for the enjoyment of education as a basic need as stipulated in the constitution of Malawi. The government’s renewed commitment to the promotion of education can be seen in the various initiatives that they have taken up in recent months.
The Director of the National Commission for Science and Technology (NCST), Gift Kadzamira, has called for huge investments in the Science, Technology, and Innovation sector and the embracing of Artificial Intelligence for progress in Socio-Economic development.
SFA Foundation Representative, Dr. Uzma Alam, said the organization is committed to supporting Malawi to achieve, strengthen, and promote Science and Innovation for better progress in the education sector.
