A minor of Kapufi Village in Senga Hill District has died after she was hit by a speeding vehicle in the previous week

Zambia: A minor of Kapufi Village in Senga Hill District has died after she was hit by a speeding vehicle. The accident happened in the previous week and included several other victims who have sustained injuries.

The victim deceased has been identified as 11 year old Mirriam Nachula. She sustained a cut on her forehead died in Mbala General Hospital last week.

She was among the three minors who were hit by the vehicle on the Mambwe-Munkunta road in Senga Hill leading to Mambwe Mission. Northern Province Police Commanding Officer, Lucky Munkondya has confirmed the development to the media in a telephonic interview.

She said three minors aged 2, 3 and 11 were hit by a vehicle that was being driven by Wigan Siame 36, of Kalukanya village in Senga Hill.

“The accident occurred when the driver who was coming from Mambwe Mission going to Mukunta village lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speeding and hit the three minors who were coming from the opposite direction,” she said

According to the Police Commanding officer, Munkondya, the minors sustained cuts on the heads and fractured legs and were taken to Mbala General Hospital where they were admitted.

She said one victim however died and has since been buried in Kapufi Village.

“The accident occurred around 15:58 hours on Friday 23rd August, 2024 and it involved three minor pedestrians who were rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, one died,” she said.

Commanding officer of the Northern Province Police, Munkondya said the driver of the vehicle has been detained in police custody while the vehicle has been parked at Mambwe Mission Council premises for safety.

Joseph Sichula, a family member also confirmed that Mirriam Nachula, who sustained a cut on her forehead later died in Mbala General Hospital.

Sichula said the deceased has since been put to rest at Chitumba village in Senga Hill District. He also disclosed that one of the victims has been discharged from the hospital while the other is still hospitalised.
