Malawi: Land disputes in the Nsanje district areas has forced government to relocate a school project. Instead of the Mpatsa Primary School, the administration will be constructing Muona Primary School.
Commissioner for Disaster in the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) Charles Kalemba shared the details of the Contruction projects. He said that the project has been shifted to Muona as Mpatsa was also negatively affected by floods.
The community had been demanding K120 million in compensation for land meant for the construction of the school at Mpatsa. This was despite the fact that Senior Chief Tengani had told the government that there is free land for the project.
Nsanje District Commissioner, Dominc Mwandira said they had to relocatee the project because a place for construction of the school was not find even after several meeetings was not found.
Senior Chief Mlolo thanked government for thinking about allocating the school construction resources in the same district. The Senior Chief said that Muona Primary School was also heavily affected by floods. After the natural disaster, the children were forced to learn in tents as the school is in bad state.
Chairperson for Nsanje District Council, Hussein Ngwali said he was disappointed to find hat communities at Tengani were uable to find free land for the construction of the school.
The chairperson was delighted with the fact that project has been relocated within the district. The council will continue making efforts at Tengani to find land for the construction of the new Mpatsa Primary
“Let those that have land for the project come out. The lack of land and other resources should not repeat. The authorities have pledged to make sure that this confusion does not happen again and waste anymore resources of the administation
Presidential Lazarus Chakwera had promised to provide K225 million for the construction of the school. The funds were bing given under the under the Presidential Charity Initiative. In October 2024, the President participated in a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Mpatsa Primary School at Tengani.
Mpatsa Primary School was destroyed by Cyclone Freddy-induced rains.
