St Kitts and Nevis commemorated World Cancer Day with the rest of the world on Tuesday, February 4. The global theme for the commemoration was United by Unique. The theme is indicative of the fact that every struggle in cancer is different from one another and needs unique care regimes.
The Prime Minister took to his social media to share some statistics about the increasing numbers of cases of cancer in the federation. The Minister of Health, shared that the nation has been witnessing a large number of cancer cases.
The Minster clarified that the number of cancer cases in the district has even surpassed the number of NCDs including cardiovascular diseases and strokes. The Minster said that this is a cause of concern and needs to be attended to.
The cancer patients, survivors et al, need the support of both the community and their families. The healthcare officials have shared that it is crucial for the patients to have a sense of security and camaraderie.
The Prime Minister, who served as a doctor in the federation prior to his political career, highlighted that there are some lesser known risk factors for cancers. Discussing these risk factors, including obesity, consumption of processed red meats, and lack of exercise.
The Prime Minister said that due to the aforementioned factors, the people of St Kitts and Nevis may be faced with an increased number of cases pertaining to cancer. The administration not only assured the people of St Kitts and Nevis of their commitment to the welfare of the people.
The Prime Minister said that the people of the country should keep in touch with their doctors and get regular checkups. The officials have shared that it will help them get alerted on any healthcare concerns.
The administration also claimed that early detection can help may people save lives and guide patients to better recovery outcomes.
