Tanzania has been ranked as the most peaceful country in East Africa in the latest Global Peace Index Ranking 2025 at position 73 out 163.
In the latest ranking, Tanzania dropped eight positions in a year that has been regional neighbors either gain or lose in their peace standings. According to the Peace Ranking in East Africa Tanzania stands first and South Sudan is on number seventh.

Reportedly, the list is produced annually by the Institute for Economic and Peace (IEP). The GPI measures global peacefulness using 23 indicators, including societal safety, conflict levels, and militarization.
As per the sources, Tanzania remains one of the more stable countries in the region, the fall in ranking signals growing challenges in maintaining societal calm amid regional instability.
Tanzania has been also praised for its peaceful political transitions and relative stability, which is now being urged to reinforce its institutions amid a shifting regional security environment.
The latest edition of the Global Peace Index Ranking 2025 reveals that peacefulness worldwide has declined for the 13th time in 17 years with most countries, including several in East Africa, that are affected by internal and geopolitical pressures.
Considering the recognition, expert in public administration and governance from the Institute of Accountancy Arusha (IAA) – Dr. Adam Mnyavanu said that Tanzania’s position under-represents its accomplishments.
He strongly believes that Tanzania deserves a higher ranking, considering how it has successfully provided a peaceful environment that allows citizens to engage in social and economic activities across the country.
According to him Tanzania’s achievements go beyond avoiding military conflict, extending to food, education and healthcare security, key indicators of peace should have further elevated its global standing.
Dr Myavanu urged Tanzanians to continue fostering peace as a foundation for national well-being and economic growth. “We need to continue strengthening our peace in order to grow our economy,” he added.
The expert attributed Tanzania’s ongoing peacefulness to effective governance from grassroots to national leadership, which ensures stability and harmony for all citizens.
