St. Kitts and Nevis: Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew extends New Year greetings to the nation and assumed the Chairmanship of CARICOM, beginning from Jan 01, 2026. In his wishes he outlined the vision and priorities for the Caribbean in the year ahead.
As the new Chairman of CARICOM, PM Drew wished all the citizens and residents across the Caribbean Community and the ones in the diaspora. He marked the start of a new chapter with gratitude and renewed hope.
The message acknowledged the strong leadership of the outgoing Chairman – Andrew Holness, the Prime Minister of Jamaica. He recognised the fellow Heads of Government, regional institutions and Caribbean people whose unity and cooperation continues to strengthen the CARICOM.
PM Drew assumes the role of Chairman with optimism and commitment, as the speaker reflected on laying the foundation of CARICOM in 1973, under the Treaty of Chaguaramas. He emphasised the purpose of CARICOM to promote the economic integration, coordinated foreign policy, functional cooperation and a stronger collective voice in global affairs.
Regional integration remained essential in an increasingly uncertain world. Achievements of CARICOM were highlighted that included the expanded regional trade, movement of skills and labour. It strengthened health systems, disaster response, education, security and climate advocacy.
His address reaffirmed continued advocacy for reparatory justice through the CARICOM Reparations Commission and support for Haiti’s stabilisation and democratic recovery ahead of its anticipated 2026 elections.
Chairman Drew affirmed to follow the motto of CARICOM diligently that says:
Together, we will strengthen it.
Together, we will protect it.
Together, we will secure the future of the Caribbean civilisation.
In his address, PM Drew underscored the global contribution of Caribbean to culture, literature, sport and intellectual thought. He noted that these successes stem from resilience, discipline and shared belief.
He also acknowledged the geopolitical tensions and national perspectives with a call for respectful dialogue, unity and strategic maturity. Looking forward he anticipates stronger coordination, shared purpose and strengthening the CARICOM.
The heads of government were advised to actively engage in the 50th Regular Meeting of the Conference, which will be hosted by the St. Kitts and Nevis in February 2026. This reaffirmed CARICOM as a Caribbean identity and collective destiny.
