St. Kitts and Nevis: Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew visited Cape Coast Castle in Ghana. It is a popular place that carries a weight which words can hardly capture. He visited there with his wife Diani Jimesha Prince-Drew.
Visiting there, PM Drew shared glimpses on his official social media handle and appreciated the opportunity. He said that walking through those dark corridors and standing inside the dungeons. Here the ancestors were once held before being forced across the Atlantic, and it was a deeply emotional and humble experience.
He further stated that, in those moments, it was impossible for him not to reflect on the pain, the suffering and the unimaginable strength of those who endured so much.
Dr. Drew also highlighted that for those who are from the Caribbean, for all of them this history is personal. The story began in places like this is the same story that shaped St. Kitts and Nevis and so many nations across the region.
He mentioned that, standing there, he felt the presence of their ancestors and the resilience that lives on through generations. For Prime Minister Drew it was a moment of quiet reflection to honour their memory. This acknowledged their sacrifices and remembered how far their people have come.
However, they might have left in bondage but have returned free. Hope is alive and their people are a resilient people, stated Drew during his visit. He added that humanity must join together not to name and shame but in the spirit of truth and reconciliation.
Prime Minister Drew is on official state visit to the West African nations, and presenting he is exploring Ghana. Earlier he also had the honour to meet the President of the Oguaa Traditional Council and Member of Ghana’s Council of State – Chief Osabarimba Dr, Kwesi Atta II, during his visit to the historic Emintsimadze Palace. Their conversation included talks on cultural exchange and reflected on the deep historical and ancestral connections that continued to link the Caribbean and West Africa.
At Cape Coast, the place which holds significance in the story of their people, reminded him of the importance of honouring the past while strengthening the bonds that unite them.
