Cape Town: The Goodwood Library marked its 65th anniversary and celebrated decades of learning, reading and community connection.
It was opened on March 10 in 1961. The library has evolved over the years from introducing computerised book issuing in 1994 to creating a dedicated children’s section and even establishing a branch library in Edgemead.
It remained a vibrant space where residents can discover new ideas by building knowledge and developing a lifelong love of reading. The Goodwood Library was built after the old Goodwood Hall was demolished.
Registered voters as well as business owners could become members at a cost of £1 per year. On one side of the building, the roof consisted of a domed skylight and beneath it was a garden.
In the late 80’s the garden was removed, and the children’s section was created in this space. In 1994 the library started issuing books on a computer system, and also in the 1990’s, Goodwood Library established a branch library in Edgemead.
The celebration was also observed by the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Services and Health – Councillor Francine Higham. Considering this, she congratulated the Goodwood Library on 65 years of serving the community. For decades, this library has been a place where residents can learn, explore new ideas and develop a lifelong love of reading.
According to Higham, like all of the libraries, Goodwood is a magical space where stories, knowledge and community can come together. Here’s to many more chapters for Goodwood Library.

The library is situated in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town. It offers library materials, computer access, and hosts events such as holiday activities, author meetings, and Code Clubs. Sometimes it also offers Free-fine week, and the residents can join to access both physical and digital resources.
