Cape Town: Learners from Langa, Bonteheuwel and Athlone enjoyed a class in the clouds. The Environmental Management Department (EMD) partnered with the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) to support its Class in the Clouds education programme. It was arranged in celebration of the annual International Day for Biological Diversity on May 22, 2026.
The Class in the Clouds programme kicked off on Monday, May 18, 2026 with learners from Mokone Primary School who had the opportunity to experience the iconic Table Mountain, which is one of the Seven Wonders of Nature. These outings will continue until next week, with learners from a range of schools including:
- Mimosa Primary School in Bonteheuwel
- Garlandale Primary School in Athlone
- Cypress Primary School in Bridgetown
- Moshesh Primary School in Langa
The EMD sponsored MyCiTi buses in the City of Cape Town, to transport learners from various under-resourced primary schools to Table Mountain. Also provided lunch packs for each learner, while TMACC in turn covered the cost of the cable car experience as well as the education programme.
Deputy Mayor and Member of the Mayoral Committee for Spatial Planning and Environment – Alderman Eddie Andrews stated that the City of Cape Town partnered with TMACC to give learners a chance to go up at the iconic Table Mountain.
This outdoor educational experience with their peers has been a truly memorable one for these kids. These outings are in celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity, on May 22, 2026, which is focusing more on acting locally for global impact this year.
Andrews said that their partnership with the TMACC has looked at the need to expand the minds and learning experiences of the bright and ambitious young learners. Especially, in less fortunate areas of Cape Town by taking them to the top of the iconic Table Mountain to learn about the world-renowned biodiversity of their very own city.
They hope that this experience plants a seed of environmental consciousness and encourage learners to see the role they can play as conservation ambassadors in some capacity in the future. The Table Mountain National Park is part of the Cape Floral Kingdom, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and global biodiversity hotspot hosting an amazing 8200 species of plants, as many of which are endemic to Cape Town.
