Cape Town: City agencies over the past week made 379 arrests. In one case the officers collared the suspect after responding to gunshots in the Samora Machel area on Friday, May 22, 2026.
Reportedly, when Metro Police Officers were on patrol in Samora Machel on Friday, they heard gunshots.
Hearing gunshot, community members pointed them in the direction of the incident, and on arrival, they saw two men running away. One of them was apprehended and found in possession of a Glock-19 concealed in his waistband.
The suspect was escorted to the crime scene, where two victims who had been shot had succumbed to their injuries. He was arrested on charges of murder, possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition, and robbery.
Other Metro Police successes in the past week have included the recovery of at least seven hijacked or stolen vehicles. A second illegal firearm and ammunition and a range of narcotics. They also made 125 arrests including 50 for driving under the influence of alcohol and issued 5550 fines for traffic and by-law transgressions.
Law Enforcement officers made 207 arrests and issued 15,931 fines for various transgressions. Over the weekend, LEAP officers recovered four firearms in the space of roughly 36 hours.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security – Alderman JP Smith stated that this is sterling work by the officers, and he’d like to extend appreciation also to the community members who helped in some of the incidents by pointing out the suspects.
They have recently pointed out the delays in firearm-related cases and the low conviction rates. Here are at least five more cases that have been registered in the space of just 48 hours, and they really hope that these will be treated with the urgency they deserve.
On the roads, Traffic Officers impounded 190 public transport vehicles and executed 664 warrants of arrest. They made 47 arrests, 32 for driving under the influence of alcohol; 11 for reckless and negligent driving and four others on various charges.
The Public Emergency Communication Centre (PECC) recorded 1,369 incidents over the weekend, including 509 requests for medical assistance, 299 by-law related incidents, 31 cases of domestic violence and 44 motor vehicle and pedestrian accidents.
The PECC is available 24-hours a day. Residents can now also report certain categories of crime and by-law transgressions on the Safety and Security feature on the City’s App. The App can be downloaded from the various app stores.
