The government of the Commonwealth of Dominica handed over keys of 16 new, modern and resilient homes to families in the Woodford Hill’s Small Farm Community. The officials have shared that the handover ceremony was hosted on September 14, 2026.
The handover is part of the second phase of the government’s mandate to deliver 215 resilient homes to the communities across Dominica. Housing is one of the main priorities for the government of Dominica.
The Minister of Housing and Urban Development Melissa Poppone-Skerrit congratulated all the recipients of the new homes. She said that they are celebrating a new reality here in Small Farm as she welcomed all the recipients of the homes to the people of the island.
She said that it was very difficult for them to pick only 16 families from the community. The Minister added that they are looking for ways to beautify the community.
They are looking to paint the sidewalks to bring a pop of color to the community and find space to build one bedroom homes for people who are not able to benefit from the initiative right now.
The sixteen families in Woodford Hill are receiving 1100-square-ft housing units with three bedrooms, open kitchen and a dining area.
The Project Manager of the Montreal Management Consultants Establishment Limited, Carl Murad, shared the details of the project with the members of the community present at the handover. He explained that the area of the whole site is about 1.6 acres. The number of individual houses is eight, which we see on that side. Additionally, the site has two main duplexes. Each of these duplexes has four houses which collectively comes to 16 homes which have been handed over to the community.
Each house includes a living dining area with an open kitchen, a master bedroom with a walk in closet and its own bathroom. The homes also have two bedrooms sharing one bathroom in addition to a laundry room and the entry porch, including the landscape. The project manager further explained that the structures have been designed to be resilient to earthquakes and hurricanes.
All of the homes also have their own septic tanks and soakaway for the black water and for the grey water and drainage system all these houses are connected to a main pipe, and that main pipe is connected to another pipe all the way to the ravine.
The decision to build the three bedroom housing units was made during the pandemic. The homes were expected to go to individuals who need them most.
The Minister of Housing appreciated the role played by the Parliamentary Representative for Woodford Hill, Fidel Grant. He advocated for his constituency to get their fair share in government’s initiatives. The Minister further recalled that the Parliamentary Representative did not want anyone to feel left out.
