Debswana World Athletics Relays Gaborone 2026 has concluded successfully. In the aftermath of the event, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the athletics relays donated remaining medical supplies from the event to the Gaborone City Council (GCC).
The donation highlights the event’s enduring legacy beyond the track. The donated supplies will help in supporting the Council’s health facilities and contribute to strengthening healthcare service delivery.
The Mayor of Gaborone, Oarabile Motlaleng, has thanked the Debswana and the Local Organising Committee for the generous donation. The Mayor shared that the donation would improve the Council’s capacity to deliver quality healthcare services to the people of the city. The authorities are working on ensuring that available resources are effectively utilised for the benefit of the community.
Mayor Motlaleng also appreciated the partnership between Debswana and Gaborone City Council beyond this donation. He said that it was a meaningful demonstration of corporate social responsibility and a commitment to improving community wellbeing.The LOC Chairperson, Professor Martin Mokgwathi, also expressed appreciation to the Government of Botswana, Debswana, World Athletics, the Botswana National Olympic Committee, volunteers and all partners whose collective efforts contributed to the successful hosting of the World Athletics Relays.
Professor Mokgwathi highlighted that the donation forms an important part of the event’s lasting legacy. The organization wants to make sure that the benefits of the initiative extend beyond the competition and continue to positively impact the wider community.
The Gaborone City Council Chief of Pharmacy, Merrian Modutlwa, thanked Debswana and the LOC for the donation. They acknowledge the contribution of all stakeholders whose collaboration made the successful hosting of the World Athletics Relays possible.
Ms Modutlwa further called for the continuation of strong partnerships that support sustainable community development and contribute to the advancement of healthcare services in Gaborone.
