Bela-Bela, Waterberg: Bela Bela Police arrested the 40-year-old male driver of a white Audi Q7 SUV on Sunday, 7 January 2024. The reason for the arrest was the high speed of the car as spped was 225km/h on a 120 zone.
The police of Limpopo caught speedster drivers on the N1 highway near Bela-Bela in Waterberg District. The drivers will appear in court on 8 January 2024 on a charge of reckless driving.
This brings the total number of speeding arrests made in the province since the beginning of December 2023 is 19.
Breakdown of arrests per district:
•Waterberg: 9 drivers, with the highest clocking 225km/ on a 120-zone
•Capricorn: 8 drivers, with the highest clocking 185km/h on an 80-zone
•Mopani: 2 drivers, with the highest clocking 146km/h on a 60-zone
•Sekhukhune: No arrests
•Vhembe: No arrests
These arrests are affidavit to the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety’s. They committed that there would be zero tolerance for reckless drivers who endanger other road users.
On the first day of the mission, Limpopo Police arrested three drivers after reckless driving on the N1 highway. Two of the motorists were caught driving more than 200 kilometres per hour, and the third was not far behind them.
Provincial Inspectors P Mmotong and SA Meso made the arrest. The Merc driver was formally charged with reckless driving at the Naboomspruit police station.
Earlier on Friday, a 39-year-old man was caught driving 203km/h in a Volkswagen Golf, and before that, a 42-year-old man in a Mercedes-Benz Vito was caught doing 174km/h – both incidents took place at the N1 highway near Ysterberg. The suspects were charged with reckless and negligent driving.
“The silly season is upon us, and our law enforcement officers are out to ensure that unruliness, negligence and disregard for the law do not lead to the unnecessary loss of life,” said Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety spokesperson Matome Taueatsoala.
Meanwhile, in Gauteng, at least a hundred Tshwane motorists were fined on Friday. Provinces have indicated that they will hone in on “hotspot” areas as part of their festive season operations.
