Rwanda: Billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates visited Rwanda to highlight the impressive advancements of the country in healthcare. During the trip, he toured the National Health Intelligence Centre, interacted with community health workers and visited a local medical facility.
Gates commended Rwanda for its significant health progress over the last 25 years and its innovative use of AI to improve patient care. His visit followed the recent launch of the Horizon 1000 project, which is a $50 million collaboration between the Gates Foundation and OpenAI. This project aims at integrating AI tools into primary healthcare clinics across the country.
The founder and former CEO of Microsoft has dedicated his life to make the world a healthier place. Upon his visit to Rwanda, he stated that over the last 25 years, Rwanda has delivered one of Africa’s most remarkable health transformations. The country showed what is possible when government is investing in life-saving technologies and focusing on getting those technologies into the hands of the people who need them most.

The foundation, in partnership with OpenAI, announced their plans months ago to bolster AI-powered health initiatives across Africa, with Rwanda serving as the foundation for the program dubbed the ‘Horizon 1000 initiative’.
The program is designed to integrate AI solutions across 1000 primary health clinics and surrounding communities in the span of two years. It currently has a capital of $50 million.
Reportedly, the program was announced in January 2026 and will aid health workers in the aforementioned sector, rather than replacing them. These processes with AI solutions will help in including diagnosis, improving resource allocation and supporting decision-making within health systems.
Bill Gates further stated that Rwanda’s health system is working extremely well. They keep a track of what they are doing, they are seeing what needs to be improved, and on what they need to take action on.

The American tech billionaire revealed that since 2000, Rwanda’s progress in reducing childhood mortality has remained outstanding, with such cases declining from 59,000 to 16,000, a 73% reduction has been recorded.
Considering this, Gates said that the quality of their health system, getting all vaccines out, has led to this fantastic result. For a while, Rwanda has been deeply investing in digital health solutions. One such initiative is the National Health Intelligence Centre (NHIC) AI Lab, which was launched in April 2025.
The facility uses data from community health workers, health centres and hospitals to improve patient outcomes, strengthen health financing and support evidence-based decisions across the healthcare system. The country has also digitised community healthcare through Community EMR (cEMR), while platforms such as E-Ubuzima and E-Fiche allow health providers to track patients’ medical journeys from initial consultation to discharge.
