Malawi: Blantyre City Council (BCC) has been conducting a clean-up campaign in various markets of the city. The practice has become a routine and aims to keep the city clean and beautiful.
The members of the organization have shared that the initiative was originally launched by the President of Malawi. President Lazarus Chakwera shared that they want to promote the beauty and cleanliness of the city.
BCC Public Relations Officer (PRO), Deborah Elliot spoke about the launch of the of clean-up Campaign Initiative. She said that ever since, the City has cleaned 11 markets, including the populous Mbayani Market.
The officials of Blantyre City Council have shared that they invite all the members of the community to come and join them in the cleanup campaign. The BCC Public Relations Officer also noted that “We observed this and making sure that we conduct a clean-up campaign every month.”
Elliot said the clean-up campaign was an ongoing campaign whereby every individual should practice as a daily routine. The promotion of hygiene and cleanliness also helps promote the health of the people.
“We particularly encourage residents of the city to adopt this habit of cleaning up their premises to keep the city clean,” she added.
One of the social commentators, Wonderful Mkhutche said it was a good campaign that has to be sustained, noting that Blantyre City has generally been a mess when it comes to waste management.
“Theres a need for a properly coordinated plan to make sure that the City is clean. The clean-up exercises do not need to be impromptu activities that are reactionary to public outcries,” he said.
Mkhutche added that people should not just clean and dump the waste need to invest in recycling of the waste.
“The City needs to have recycling plants that process the waste to usable materials and the importance of this initiative is that it will improve hygiene and reduce pollution,” he observed.
President Chakwera launched the clean-up campaign initiative in November 2020 aimed at keeping cities clean.
