Botswana: The Botswana Football Association (BFA) held a press conference on Tuesday at Lekidi Football Center to brief the media about the Mares 2.0 Campaign ahead of the Morocco 2024 Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) games.
Botswana Football Association Chief Executive Officer, Mfolo Mfolo explained that the Mares 2.0 Campaign theme came about the Mares’ back to back qualification for the continental games in 2022 and 2024, hence “The Mares 2.0 Campaign.
Botswana Football Association Chief Executive Mfolo added that the women’s national team is an inspiration to any girl child aspiring to be a football player. He said even though preparations for the Continental showpiece in Morocco can be costly and time consuming, it is imperative for the team to be trained well to stand a better chance to excel during the competitions.
Botswana Football Association Head of Marketing, Masego Busumane, called on their stakeholders and the business community to offer sponsorship and donation for The Mares as they embark on the journey towards the WAFCON games.
The expenses for the three international training camps stand at P5,127,000, P3,057,693 for international friendly games and P1,815,307 for pre-competition costs.
The Mares will embark on three international boot camps in Turkey, Saudi Arabia and the USA before the WAFCON games. The first camp is expected to take place from February 18 to February 2024. Busumane further added that they have planned fundraising activities in place ranging from a football festival, a cultural festival, a golf day and many more events still to be announced.
Residents seemed happy, but they were also curious about the AFCON bid changes and asked about the money needed to build three stadiums.
“Where are the Afcon bid changes? How much money was needed to build three stadiums?” asked Tshabadira Moshashane, a resident of Botswana.
Moreover, according to reports, the first camp is expected to take place on February 18, and people are very excited about it.
