Keoagile Atamelang, who serves as the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure in Botswana met with registered bus drivers and transport operators. The meeting was hosted on September 1, 2026 and aimed to discuss the proposed TANA public transport model.
The Minister addressed the bus drivers and the transport operators during the meeting. He informed them that the transport sector of the country is owned by the government and people of Botswana.
The Minister has confirmed that the government is dedicated to providing -class public transportation to the people. The government is working towards achieving this mandate through an integrated metro rail and bus system.
The Minister also acknowledged that the people of Botswana have been struggling with issues like congestion and mismanagement of the transport sector. The government intends to solve these issues by working with the transport operators with the help of TANA.
The public transport model has drawn inspiration from the transport services of developed nations. The government will test out these battery operated buses at busy routes to evaluate the working of the programme.
The officials have shared time, performance, energy efficiency, charging requirements and suitability for working in Gaborone. The Minister of Transport and Infrastructure said that they will bring transport operators together.
The officials have shared that they have identified new routes in Gaborone. The new routes are being designed to help improve coverage and reduce travel times for commuters.
The officials have also added that the buses which will run on this route will be equipped with wifi and meet modern standards. The officials have shared that they will ensure the cleanliness of the buses.
The Minister called this development a transition into something new for the people of Botswana. The officials have shared that the sector should transition from combustion to Electric Vehicles.
The officials have shared that the government will put in efforts to support local EV manufacturing. The TANA programme will served as an opportunity to drive clean, affordable public transport for the people of Botswana.
The organisation has shared that under the TANA programme, Transport Operators will also own a percentage of the framework.
