Botswana: Gaborone City Council’s (GCC) Executive Staff met with the District Health officers Management Team (DHMT).
The meeting was aimed at coming up with ways to map out the logistical support for the impending transition of local clinics from the Ministry of Health to the Ministry of Local Government and Traditional Affairs.
The Ministry of Health recently handed over local clinics to the council and individuals districts. The officials have shared that the transition is important to make sure that the responsibility for healthcare is equally divided.
The inclusion of the Ministry of Local Government and Traditional Affairs takes some of the burden from the health Ministry. The officials in the Gaborone City Council have already started the procedure for the transition.
The Gaborone City Council has shared several images from the meeting hosted between the Council Executive Staff and DHTM. During the interaction the two teams discussed the best way to make sure that the transition of local clinics to council jurisdiction can be done seamlessly.
Gaborone City Town Clerk Daniel Katjinotjiwa has promised that the council is dedicated to making sure that the transition is smooth and easy. Katjinotjiwa highlighted that the Gaborone City Council is working with health stakeholders of the capital city. The collaboration wants to make sure that effective healthcare services can be made available for the community.
The officials have shared that the Gaborone City Council meeting was aimed at discussing statistics.
The representative of DHMT, Dr Mothusi Mogatle revealed that the city council will be getting 16 local clinics under the reorganization effort. The officials have shared that the number also includes four clinics that operate 24 hours service.
Government has taken a decision to transfer clinics and other services under primary health care back to local authorities. This action has been taken with the aim to enhance healthcare management in local communities.
Through this restructuring initiative, they want to enhance service delivery in the district.
