Botswana (Maunatlala): The Botswana Police Service (BPS) donated a house to Kopano Lebang in Maunatlala village on Friday (19/01/2024).
Speaking at the official handing over of the house built by Maunatlala Police, the Acting Commissioner of Police, Solomon Mantswe, said the spirit of giving and caring for one another is embedded in Setswana culture and tradition.
He said these attributes have, over the years, contributed immensely to the self-sustenance and socio-economic development of the nation. Mantswe noted that the gesture is in line with the Vision 2036 Pillar 2 on “Human Social Development,” which aspires to improve community welfare and living conditions.
He said the provision of shelter to economically disadvantaged people gives them dignity and a sense of belonging in the community.
Mantswe thanked members of the community for their contribution to crime prevention, saying they are the pillars of strength in delivering police mandate. He encouraged them to continue working with the police through cluster policing programmes.
In her overview of the project, Acting Divisional Commander North Central, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Goabamang One Mmadintsi, revealed that the bachelor house consisting of a Bedroom, sitting room, kitchen bathroom, and toilet cost over P91,000.00.
Mmadintsi said the project was made possible through voluntary contributions by Police officers and their stakeholders in the area.
For his part, the beneficiary, Kopano Lebang, thanked the police for their good heart and spirit of giving back to the community. He said this is not just a donation but a blessing from God. He expressed gratitude, saying the shelter would shield him from harsh conditions that might come.
Giving a vote of thanks, Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, who is also a Member of Parliament for Lerala-Maunatla, Sethabelo Modukanele, commended BPS for the spirit of giving, saying that the gesture should continue to other people who are less privileged in the community. He added that this has brought joy to his village.
Modukanele pleaded with the beneficiary to take care of the house.
This is the 83rd house that members of the BPS have built for the less fortunate members of the society.
