The Deputy Commissioner of Police made these remarks during the Arms Quota Raffle dra held on Friday at the Special Support Group Band Hall. During the event Mantswe highlighted that integrity and accountability remain central in fostering public trust for the police service organisation.
He highlighted that during this year’s raffle, the organization has drawn a total of 270 applicants with 135 applicants for shotgun and rifle license each. He further explained that the drawn applicants will later undergo a screening process of fingerprinting.
This is being done in order to check the applicants for criminal clearance before being issued with licences to acquire firearms.
The Deputy Commissioner advised applicants who will be successful including those who already own firearms and ammunition to comply with the rules. The law on this topic has been clarified in the provisions of the Arms and Ammunition Act. He asked them to ensure that their firearms were always under lock and key to ensure their safety.
Deputy Commissioner of Mantswe added that the Police have in the past received several reports of unfortunate incidents involving firearms. where there were some casualties due to the mishandling of firearms, abuse and improper storage.
Director of Security Support Services at Botswana Prisons Service, Senior Assistant Commissioner David Balotlhanyi Rapula thanked attendants for their participation. He stressed the importance of firearm safety and encouraged unsuccessful applicants to persevere and try again in future draws.
The reason for applying for ammunition licenses can vary from person to person. It is important, however to make sure that the usage of the firearms is done within limit and can be monitored for safety.
