Cape Town: Work to restore airflow at Bellville Library has gone under way. The library has recently scaled back the services this week, and the building was handed over to a contractor to restore the facilities.
Reportedly, the industrial heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system of the Bellville Library has provided the facility with oxygen, airflow and cooling systems, that has suffered irreparable damage as a result of ongoing acts of vandalism over an extended period of time.
As per the sources, the system is now in the process of being repaired, which will make the library compliant with Building Health and Safety regulations. The repairs are estimated to be completed by April 25, 2025 permitting weather conditions.
Furthermore, the library will remain closed until the adequate air-flow which was established throughout the facility.
Notably, limited services will continue to be provided while the repairs are being concluded, which will include:
- Drop and Collect
- Holds or Reservations
- Inter-Library Loans
- Email Correspondence
- External Programmes (presented at early childhood centres, hospitals, etc.)
- Hall Bookings
- E-resources will continue to be available 24/7
During this period, the patrons were encouraged to visit alternative libraries.
Considering this, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Services and Health – Councillor Francine Higham said that they sincerely apologise for the inconvenience that was caused. It appreciated the understanding and continued support of the residents.
The Bellville Library is one of the flagship facilities and is one of the top circulating libraries. It has become a landmark and a space which facilitates the cultural and artistic activities.
Higham expressed that they want to thank the patrons for their patience. Also, they are looking forward to reopening the doors to patrons and to be of service again to the community.
