Cape Town: Central Library of City of Cape Town completes 70 years and celebrates this great milestone. It is situated in a unique heritage building with five distinct libraries that is spread along four levels.
Reportedly, the Central Library celebrates 70 years of page-turning service to patrons around the city.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Services and Health – Councillor Francine Higham said that the Central Library is a hub of activity and a sanctuary for curious minds. It is a much-loved facility where those who visit can access information and explore their passions.
Central Library has been a constant source of empowerment. From children discovering the magic of reading, to students deep-diving into research, or adults looking for new perspectives.
Councillor Francine Higham said, “I am proud of the role Central Library plays in Cape Town. Behind every book, every programme and every event lies the tireless dedication of our librarians.”
According to Higham, the Central Library is the heart and soul of the library and have made it a space for connection. She added, “As we celebrate this milestone, let’s ensure that this library remains a dynamic and relevant space for generations to come.”
“To all the patrons, supporters, volunteers and staff who have made this library what it is today, thank you for your unwavering commitment. We look forward to many more chapters to come,” stated Francine Higham.
Central Library was founded in December 1954 and officially opened its doors to the public in January 1955. A year later, another reference and music library branch was opened in the Here Sewentien Building in Long Street, to cater to people in business, commerce and industry.
The Central and Long Street Libraries amalgamated in 1965, which was housed in Wale Street. By 1981, the library material amassed over time as it demanded more space and the facility relocated to the City Hall.

At the same location after 27 years, the Central Library moved house once more, to its current location at the Old Drill Hall. The library is renowned for its vast collection of books, research materials and multimedia resources. It offers services in multiple languages and reflects the diverse community of Cape Town.
The library building is an architectural landmark and blends historic charm with modern facilities by creating a unique atmosphere for study and leisure. It holds more than 200,000 items with a significant portion dedicated especially to African literature and materials in Afrikaans, isiXhosa and English.
It has specialised sections dedicated to children’s literature, young adults, art, music and audiovisual materials. The library houses reference materials, consisting of historical and academic resources.
Adding up to its physical collections, Central Library provides access to a wide array of digital resources, including eBooks, online databases, PressReader, a state-of-the-art SmartCape computer lab and free internet access.
The city library also hosted a variety of educational and cultural programmes, such as book clubs, poetry sessions, workshops, language classes, public lectures, book launches and art exhibitions.
“Happy 70th birthday to Central Library. I wish you another year of inspiring minds and offering a space for learning and imagination. Here’s to many more years of stories, knowledge and community,” congratulated Councillor Higham.
