City of Cape Town expands the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme. Member of the Mayoral Committee for Economic Growth – Alderman James Vos stated that the department of Home Affairs has taken this decision following the domestic tour operators that will be a major boost not only to South Africa’s tourism industry but to the economy at large.
James Vos expressed that he openly welcomes the Department of Home Affairs’ expansion of the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme (TTOS) as a critical step towards making South Africa a more accessible and attractive destination for international visitors.
By streamlining the visa processes, the initiative will boost the tourism sector of the country and will strengthen the broader economy. He mentioned that for many years, they have actively advocated for easier visa systems to facilitate travel and trade.
Last month, James Vos embarked on a mission to India and engaged directly with key tour operators to encourage them to sign-up for the TTOS and will drive more visitors to South Africa. the response was overwhelmingly positive, and he was confident that this [programme will lead to increased arrivals and economic benefits.
Vos further added that, earlier this year in 2025, he also had the privilege of standing alongside the Minister of Home Affairs – Dr. Leon Schreiber at Cape Town International Airport to welcome the first group of Chinese tourists using this system. Their arrival marked a major milestone in the efforts to make travel to South Africa more seamless and efficient.
According to a Wesgro economic report released in 2022, in South Africa, tourism is a key economic driver and for every 100 international air arrivals, two jobs are created in Cape Town. This initiative is exactly what they actually need to ensure the continued growth and job creation across South Africa.
While Cape Town stands to gain significance, as per the given position as a top global destination, the real victory is for South Africa as a whole. They are at the right place at the right time to maximise the opportunity and they are looking forward to work with the industry partners to ensure the success of the programme.
Vos further confirmed that he will continue to push for policies that makes travel easier, attracts more visitors and will unlock new economic opportunities for the country.
